The REWE in Wiesbaden-Erbenheim, opened in 2021, is Europe’s first supermarket with a resource-saving food production system on the roof. On the building-integrated rooftop farm of the approximately 1,500 sqm supermarket, fish and basil are cultivated and sold directly in the store and in the surrounding area. The fish waste is used as fertilizer for the plants, which in turn purify the water from the fish tanks so it can flow back to the perch. A circular system that is revolutionizing urban food production.

The glass rooftop farm and the supermarket are supported by 42 wooden columns, creating a natural market atmosphere with plenty of daylight. Overall, the Green-Farming Market stores 700 tons of CO₂ through its sustainable construction.
