Kap West in Munich realized with WICONA modular façade solution

With Kap West, a new architectural highlight has been completed in Munich. This exceptional office building in the up-and-coming district “Am Hirschgarten” impresses with its distinctive architecture and particularly sustainable construction. For the realization of the approximately 12,600 m² façade of the LEED Gold-certified high-rise, the architects relied, among other things, on a project-specific modular façade by WICONA.

In the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district, a future-oriented residential and commercial location is being created on a 7,300 m² former industrial site (MK8) – the new quarter “Am Hirschgarten”. The most striking building of this urban development is the high-rise Kap West, designed by Wiel Arets Architekten. The modern office complex sets new standards in terms of architectural concept as well as location quality and user experience.

Each of the two U-shaped base buildings is topped with a distinctive tower. The slightly taller southern tower, at 60 meters, features a cantilevered block – designed in opposite rotation and floating approximately 18 meters above ground – serving as a highly visible architectural landmark. The visionary concept of flexible, modern, and future-ready working in an urban environment is complemented by a campus-like arrangement of open spaces, including greened courtyards and rooftops.

Intelligent Modular Façade Construction

The realization of Kap West’s façade presented a special challenge due to the numerous requirements to be considered. For example, full-height window elements with concealed, operable ventilation modules and opening limiters were desired. The construction also had to meet high demands for acoustic insulation, rain resistance, air tightness, and wind load performance.

The experts from Fassadentechnik Scharl (Ehingen) planned a suspended solution consisting of a 220 mm-thick modular façade with externally mounted horizontal and vertical mullions (350, 550, and 750 mm wide). The façade was executed based on the highly thermally insulating WICONA aluminium window system WICLINE 75 evo. This system was reinforced outward according to project requirements by Ruppert App (Leutkirch), equipped with blind sashes, integrated sun shading guides, and mounted with consoles positioned alongside the structural supports.

Another special feature is the three sealing levels. Thanks to the highly flexible system, relative ceiling deformations (+12 mm) can be accommodated without issue.

The 12 mm thin and very compact Dekton façade panels from Cosentino were hung on the modular and extensively modified façade elements using invisible aluminium anchors. The more than 2,200 elements – comprising window systems, ventilation modules, and suspended façade panels – were pre-fabricated and delivered to the construction site, allowing efficient assembly within the tight project schedule. A thoughtfully designed, sustainable concept for an impressive building ensemble.
