Aesthetic. Functional. Contemporary. New fire station in Dornstadt realised with project-specific window and door systems from WICONA

The new fire station in Dornstadt in the Alb-Donau district has recently been completed. Designed by Seidel Architekten und Generalplaner GmbH (Ulm), the new building impresses with its modern architecture and high level of functionality – not least thanks to the project-specific window and door systems from WICONA.

Functional new building with state-of-the-art facilities

For 44 years, the Dornstadt fire brigade was housed in an extension of the municipal maintenance depot. In summer 2023, the team moved into the newly constructed fire station on the outskirts of the town. The building was positioned on a tapering site to optimally support the operational processes of the fire brigade and provides a modern and contemporary working environment for around 40 firefighters as well as the municipality’s youth fire brigade.

The monolithic-looking building is divided into three functional areas. On the ground floor are the alarm area with adjoining workshop and functional rooms as well as the vehicle hall with washing bays. The upper floor accommodates bright and welcoming recreation and training rooms. The eastern part of the site features a training yard and a fire tower specifically designed for operational exercises.

Energy-efficient and aesthetic façade solution

In addition to aesthetics and functionality, energy efficiency also played an important role in the architects’ planning. With the exception of the vehicle hall and the training tower, the building was constructed to the KfW Efficiency House 55 standard.

The flexible composite window system WICLINE 115 AFS proved to be the ideal façade solution for the project. The high-quality construction made of thermally broken aluminium profiles combines an inner and outer window sash, creating a cavity between them. Thanks to this intelligent principle, significantly improved thermal insulation and high sound insulation can be achieved without complex additional measures.

For the new fire station, the metal construction specialists at Glas Seele GmbH (Neusäß) produced various versions of the composite window – including solutions with enhanced burglar resistance (resistance class RC2) on the ground floor. Additional variants feature integrated motorised solar shading as well as an aesthetic glass balustrade for fall protection.

The innovative WICSTYLE 75 evo door system was installed to match the window solution both visually and functionally. With a construction depth of only 75 mm, the system offers high thermal insulation performance and excellent building physics values.

A particular visual highlight is the generous two-leaf main entrance door measuring 6500 mm in width and 3003 mm in height – a true eye-catcher when entering the new building.
