Webuilding Partnership

Hand in hand, support and a guarantee of sustainable access to education in areas where children need it the most.

A positive impact on local communities is crucial when it comes to being truly sustainable. And, you can always achieve more when you work together with the right partners who share the same values. That's why WICONA have decided to co-operate with the non-governmental organisation (NGO) WEbuilding, an international group of architects who support sustainable architecture and development to help communities around the world build a better and brighter future. Hand in hand, we want to work together to support and ensure sustainable access to education in areas where children need it most.

About WEbuilding

Webuilding is a non-profit organisation founded in 2015 by an international group of architects and is powered by highly qualified and fully committed volunteers.

WEbuilding aims to support development projects in the Global South by using a sustainable approach to construction and project planning. Together with other experienced local NGO's, they strive to positively impact the quality of life for those in under-resourced communities and to show that a more environmentally-friendly architectural approach can have a far-reaching positive effect. WEbuilding supports with interdusciplinary knowledge, an agile network, reliable partners and many years of experience within the construction industry. This results in unique architectural solutions that benefit the individual, the local community and society as a whole.

Access to education is an important key to a functioning society

WEbuilding's projects significantly contribute to this - an offer people very concrete benefits:

  • Education increases the chance to fulfil a self-supporting life free from poverty
  • Health is improved through school meals and clean drinking water
  • Additonal jobs created by local companies and helpers
  • Knowledge about sustainable materials and building practices is transferred to future generations
  • Social commitment and social cohesion is promoted
  • Quality of life is improved
  •

Since WICONA recognise the values and ambitions of WEbuilding, we have signed a 3 year agreement together to co-operate on many projects.

Our Joint Project : A School in Ranja-Valley, Haiti

During a three month internal challenge in the start of 2021, WICONA employees have walked, ran and cycled to reach a group goal to contribute a donation of €20,000. By covering the distance of a trip to the moon and back, their efforts and commitment enables WEbuilding to build a classroom for a school in Haiti as part of our partnership.

The project in Haiti is the construction of a school for the children in the Grand-Anse region which is prone to natural disasters. Hurricanes, earthquakes and floods are major threats to its population (1). Disasters of this nature have devastated the area in the past. Around 44% of hurricanes that occurred in Haiti hit the Grand'Anse region - second to the Sud region at 59%. Grand'Anse has other concerns that pertain to environmental hazards like deforestation and epidemics including cholera, HIV / AIDS and tuberculosis (2).

The children living in Ranja Valley do not have the chance to attend school as there is no school where they live. In order to go to school, they have to cross a river every day which puts their lives in danger, particularly when the river is flooded.

WEbuilding plans to build a primary school with six classrooms and toilet units. Each classroom will be able to accommodate 30 pupils. This represents 450 children benefitting from the school over ten years. The approximate budget for this entire project is €75,000. WICONA's contribution will help to build an entire classroom for 30 children. Construction will start in Spring 2022 and is due to complete Autumn 2022.

Long Term Goal - Change the Brief

But WICONA want to go beyond...

In addition to participating in the Haiti project, WICONA will also support WEbuilding in future projects. These don't just consist of building schools, but also of putting partners, clients and suppliers in touch with WEbuilding. To facilitate this collaboration we warmly welcomed WEbuilding to the NEXT Studio in Frankfurt.

Partnering with WEbuilding and gathering all employees to work toward a more sustainable future shows how collaboration can lead to greater things compared to working alone. Reaching a high-scale impact on society and our future can only be done with high-scale mobilisaton.

Our sustainability journey can only be done by working together with employees, suppliers, customers, local organisations and NGOs towards a better society. Working together in partnerships is the only way to challenge our market, our neighbours and our governments to build differently, more responsibly. To change the brief and Build Beyond Tomorrow.
