New construction of a day care centre in Bad Reichenhall
The two-storey building is made of concrete with a circumferential wooden gallery. This perimeter serves as an escape balcony, covered play area and shading element. Daylight falls gently into the rooms through this perimeter (no direct sunlight). This concept was developed based on the Japanese "Engawa. As a result, no external solar shading elements are required throughout the building.
Two stair towers are located along the perimeter, designed as both escape routes and play towers for the children. Arranged diagonally in the floor plan, the towers allow direct access from the rooms to the outdoors via the gallery. This design frees the main staircase from fire safety constraints and allows more architectural freedom.
The nursery rooms are located on the ground floor, while the kindergarten rooms are on the upper floor. The floor slab and the roof are made of semi-prefabricated concrete elements. The flat roof has extensive green roofing and PV systems.
The multi-purpose room is planned on the ground floor directly next to the entrance area and, as the heart of the building, offers various utilisation options for both age groups (U3 and Ü3). The common rooms on both floors are planned on the south side with direct access to the garden.
The administration and supply rooms are planned on the north side. Both sides are connected via the play corridors. Daylight enters the building through the skylights above the play corridor on the upper floor.
Material, colour and lighting concept
The materials are left as natural as possible so that the children can perceive the changing process of the natural materials.
This can also minimise the cost of building maintenance. A coated wooden surface is more costly to renovate than a natural wooden surface. The rough-sawn larch cladding allows the wood surface colour to grey evenly.
The colours of the building are restrained, as the children bring the colours into the house. The building is designed as a backdrop for the children.
