Completed Projects

Our VARIOLUX glasshouse system has already proven itself in numerous demanding projects and meets all European standards in the façade sector. VARIOLUX is compatible with all established WICONA window, door and façade systems – and stands for quality and system reliability

Botanical Garden Giessen

In the Botanical Garden of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen, the historic Palm House has been reconstructed in accordance with heritage preservation standards. Project-specific roof and façade systems from WICONA were used in the process. The Palm House, built in 1907 – consisting of a central domed structure with one aisle on each side – is located in Germany’s oldest botanical university garden and was unusable for a long time after its destruction in World War II. As part of the construction measures, the three-aisled building was renovated on an area of around 800 m², along with the adjoining display greenhouses. A new social area for the gardeners and a Victoria House were also built.

JACKYS GLASS HOUSE

A world of indulgence in a unique setting: this is how 'Jacky's Glashaus' in Ettenheim near Freiburg can be described. The restaurant, located inside a vast glasshouse, offers guests not only excellent food and drinks, but also a pleasant indoor climate all year round and a first-class view – thanks in no small part to the VARIOLUX glasshouse system.

ALTMARKTGARTEN IN OBERHAUSEN

In 2019, the Altmarktgarten was opened on the roof of the newly constructed Jobcenter in Oberhausen – a greenhouse where herbs, lettuce and strawberries are grown for the local market, based on the inFARMING concept developed by Fraunhofer UMSICHT. A total of over 1,000 m² of space is available across four climate zones, which can be individually controlled depending on the temperature and humidity requirements of the plants. In addition, Fraunhofer UMSICHT operates a separate research area covering 160 m². This urban farming project is far more than just a production site for sustainable food: the resources used come directly from the building itself. For example, waste heat and wastewater are used in the production of food.

BAYAN BOTANIC GARDEN

A unique greenhouse has been created in the botanical garden of the Emir of Kuwait. Covering more than 3,500 m², it houses plants from a wide range of climate zones – made possible not least by the project-specific roof and façade system Variolux Thermo36 hi. The botanical greenhouse is located on the grounds of the Bayan Palace – the main palace of the Emir of Kuwait – and is part of the nearly 16,000 m² botanical garden. The glass structure impresses with its spectacular architecture featuring three arches up to 12.5 metres high and includes not only the plant exhibition but also meeting areas for state guests and visitors of the Emir.

REWE GREEN-FARMING MARKT IN WIESBADEN-ERBENHEIM

Opened in 2021, the REWE store in Wiesbaden-Erbenheim is the first supermarket in Europe to feature resource-efficient food production on its roof. On the building-integrated rooftop farm of the approximately 1,500 m² supermarket, fish and basil are cultivated and sold directly in the store and surrounding area. The fish waste is used as fertilizer for the plants, which in turn purify the water from the fish tanks, allowing it to flow back to the perch. A closed-loop system that is revolutionizing food production in urban environments. The glass rooftop farm and the market itself are supported by 42 wooden columns, creating a natural marketplace atmosphere with plenty of daylight. Thanks to its sustainable construction, the Green Farming store stores a total of 700 tons of CO₂.

JARDIN D`HIVERRE IN BAARN (NL)

In the middle of a 25-hectare tree nursery, the Jardin d’Hiverre event center was built in 2017 at the Bomencentrum in Baarn (NL), with a total area of 1,120 m² and space for up to 450 people. The ground floor of the sustainable glass complex is mainly used for conferences and receptions. Amber trees on the south side of the building provide ample shade on hot summer days. Large windows in the basement ensure bright meeting rooms. A kitchen, sanitary facilities, and an office are located on the upper floor. The glass roof in Victorian style was mounted on a load-bearing timber-steel structure. Hans Blokzijl, owner and director of Bomencentrum Nederland, chose green-tinted glass, which – in combination with the selected wood – creates a particularly warm atmosphere.
