Transport & Air Emissions

Safer driving doesn't just mean that our staff and those around us are safer, it also has a profound effect on the environment. We aim to reduce our fuel consumption by the end of 2019 by 4% compared with 2018.

The potential reduction of transport based impacts can be found here

Our vehicles are regularly maintained so that they are the most fuel-efficient possible. Checks on our fleet include:

  • servicing all vehicles regularly
  • inflating our tyres correctly as under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to 3 per cent
  • monitoring fuel consumption and driving style
  • checking the exhaust system is in good working order

Our fleet is measured on a whole with driving style, activity per shift, distance travelled and more. This is used to work as a team to reduce our impact on the environment.

Individual driving style is also monitored. Driving styles that include accelerating and breaking more often uses more fuel, whereas driving steadily consumes less. The amount of fuel used has a profound impact - so all staff is encouraged to drive economically and safely. Each individual report sent includes information on how to improve their scoring.

With a league table, staff members all do their part to reduce costs and environmental impact by driving safely.

Air Emissions

Air emissions are also a by-product of the aluminium production process and are generated at all stages of the value chain. Key air emissions generated by our operations include fluorides, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carbon dioxides amongst others. Emissions to the external environment are minimised through treatment of the effluent gases prior to their release to the atmosphere.

Our targets:

·         Maintain our industry front-runner position (first quartile) when benchmarked against our industry peers

·         Continuously reduce specific GHG emissions from electrolysis to comply with the EU benchmark on a long-term basis
