Wicona Projects, part of Hydro Building Systems, has launched its unitised curtain walling system in the UK , which can reduce time on site by up to 70 per cent.
The move has been made in response to the increased demand for unitised in the UK and follows the success of the Wicona system across Europe . The curtain wall was developed in Germany and has been used extensively internationally on a wide variety of high profile and technically challenging projects.
The Wicona system offers all the speed, quality, performance and safety advantages of off-site construction with the resources and expertise of the Wicona Projects team, which will oversee the full facade project.
Wicona’s complete turnkey service gives specifiers, contractors and developers unrivalled peace of mind and the benefit of a seamless and integrated approach, from system design, glass specification, fabrication, transportation and handling, to installation, testing and site auditing.
The unitised system is fully glazed and sealed off-site. Gaskets and glazing beads are installed in factory conditions before the complete units are moved to site for fast installation onto pre-prepared fixings. Panels up to 4m by 4m can be fixed to steel or concrete frames for further design flexibility and installed using a crane or monorail system, eliminating the need for scaffolding and improving site safety.
This more innovative approach to the building envelope results in earlier fitting out and a more predictable construction programme. Quality and performance are enhanced because the façade panels are completed off-site in a controlled factory environment.
Suitable for both new build and refurbishment, the Wicona unitised system can be supplied from stock for fast track schemes or can be adapted to specific project requirements. New designs can also be developed for more complex façades.
A combination of profiles, external feature caps and glazing can be specified and there is an unlimited variety of aesthetic variations incorporating stone cladding; metal, composite or polycarbonate panels; windows, doors and fixed light glazing; brise soleil sunshading and photovoltaic panels.
Because the panels are manufactured off-site and craned into position, the unitised system is a highly efficient solution where site access is restricted. Storage of cladding materials and glass handling on site is also eliminated – a major advantage for constrained city centre sites.
The Wicona unitised system is fully tested to the most stringent European standards for air permeability, water tightness under dynamic and static pressure, and wind resistance.
