ZEB in practise
A zero-energy building, also known as a zero net energy (ZNE) building, is a popular term to describe a buildings use with zero net energy consumption and zero carbon emissions annually.
The WICONA technology centre demonstrates in addition to the functional characteristics as test centre for window and facade constructions, how the companys mission statement regarding sustainibility is realizable on a building. A special constructed visualization shows all energy yields and consumptions exactly to the day.
WICONA Test Centre
The objective was to run an energy self-sufficient factory building. Over a holistic planning approach a ideal combination of facade, building service engineering and utilization of natural resources was determined. Large-scaled window areas in the facade and the roof enables working almost without artificial light. Simultaneously there is no need for cooling. The water demand for the facade tests was reduced to an ecologically compliants by a closed water circuit with cistern and multi-stage filter.
The need of useful energy for heating and artificial light arises about 23 kWh/m²a. This is a value which is closed to the limit value of a passivhouse building in the residential construction. The need is covered by a photovoltaic system on the roof of the building. Furthermore an obtained surplus covers the needed operating energy of the test centre.
As a result the WICONA Test Centre is one of the first zero-energy factory buildings.
WICONA technology centre
At WICONA´s technology centreinBellenberg, Sapa Building Systems has installed the new multifunctional TEmotion facade on an existing property for the first time.
The installation demonstrates the enormous benefits that TEmotion offers planners and architectsin existing properties:

The TEmotion facade in Bellenberg
These benefits have already been realised with the new TEmo-tion façade at the WICONA training centre.
The building was originally constructed in 1991 and had a single-skin façade construction as a traditional window hinge with fanlights, without daylight control system, mechanical ventilation or cooling. On hot summer days, the room became uncomfort-able to work in due to the lack of ventilation and the inadequate shading provided by the internal vertical blinds.
The training centre’s new façade comprises six TEmotion elements measuring 3.10 m x 3.50 m, into which 12 technical elements are inserted. The construction was designed as a double façade with a Ucw value of 1.0 W/(m²K) and room-height glazing divided into 30% opaque and 70% transparent. The external single pane is tinted green to adapt the optics to the appearance of the neighbouring new Test Centre. The internal façade has double-insulated glazing with an Ug value of 1.1 W/(m²K).
The 12 technical elements each contain a newly developed Trox façade system ventilation device, designed with heating and cooling register for room air conditioning and adjustable via a three-stage ventilator. Decentralised assembly permits the use of highly efficient motors in each fan and thus minimises electricity consumption.
Power supplies and ventilation
Each technical element has been forward-spaced on the south side like a spandrel glass in a monocrystalline photovoltaic module with back ventilation. The electricity yield for each TEmotion element is around 400 W and is fed into the grid.
Other central components of the TEmotion façade include ventilation flaps. During the day, these allow the most natural controlled ventilation. The air flows in freely, warms the room and can be ejected via the upper ventilation flaps. When air condi-tioning is switched on, the air is sucked out via the ventilation flaps, cooled or heated in the façade system ventilation device and then fed into the room. At night, the room can be flushed with cool air. In the event of fire, the ventilation flaps also serve to extract smoke from the room.
Light and sunlight
The daylight control system and sun and glare protection are controlled using daylight-directing Venetian blinds – two-part blind louvre (supplier: Warema). As a result, the use of daylight can be controlled differently and directed as required. The system ensures shady and glare-free zones, and ensures sufficient brightness in the room. It also offers protection from prying eyes, without impairing the outside view.
